About the event

“Oyez, Oyez, Oyez! The Supreme Court of the United States of America is now in session. Draw nigh and ye shall be heard. God save the United States of America and this Honorable Court.”

With that pronouncement the Supreme Court will begin a new year on the first Monday in October, a new Court calendar of cases, in the “heat” of a Presidential election. What will the new year bring? Topics will include:

  • United States v. Trump

    (immunity decision)

  • Separation of powers

  • Article III of U.S. Constitution

  • Originalism

  • Textualism

  • “Shadow docket”

  • Enforceable Ethics Code of Conduct

One of the major campaign issues in this Presidential election is women’s right to seek and obtain medical treatment for their reproductive health. According to an article by Ira Shapiro published in The Hill, an “uber conservative court” was created during the Bush and Trump administrations, which will have a bearing on this and other issues. Is this “conservative” court an “activist” court - pronouncing law - or “just calling balls and strikes” - acting impartially?
