Exploration of Evil

Resources for The Exploration of Evil in the Wisdom Tradition

"Boehme for Beginners" by Cynthia Bourgeault. This article was first published in Gnosis Magazine in 1997 and is a commentary on 16th century German mystic Jacob Boehme's cosmology and teaching on how the formless comes into form.

People of the Lie, by M. Scott Peck. Published in 1983, People of the Lie was a first attempt at addressing a psychology of evil. It is a resource Cynthia references and critiques. Particular chapters to look at would be chapters 2 and 4.

Will And Spirit, by Gerald May. This resource explores language around evil and sin in psychological terms. Cynthia recognizes the work goes on to more current analysis of the psychology of evil. May addresses the topic in chapters 9 and 10 and also on page 233ff.

There is a free, drop-in book discussion group on the above books, hosted by Heather Ruce. Heather is a Wisdom spiritual director, therapist, and senior student in Cynthia's wisdom network. The group meets on Tuesdays from 10:30AM-12PM ET, beginning with 30 minutes of centering prayer, and runs from Feb.28 - April 11. You can join via Zoom using this link, passcode: wisdom. Resources for this group can be found here, password: Encounter.
