Thursday Class
The women in the Thursday lass read widely and discuss openly their spiritual questions. They think outside the box and are not afraid to engage in conversation with each other about how the spiritual life impacts everyday life.

A Spiritual Response to Our Communal Life

For many years, Parker Palmer has been one of our spiritual teachers and guides.  We have read his books A Hidden Wholeness and The Active Life.  His spiritual understandings influenced by the Quaker traditions of simplicity and silence, his belief in open dialog and deep listening, and his honesty about his struggle with depression have endeared him to readers.

This Fall we will once again turn to Parker Palmer’s wisdom and his longings for of our communal life. Healing the Heart of Democracy is part spiritual reflection, part history lesson, part contemporary observation. Palmer writes: “There are some human experiences that only the heart can comprehend and only heart-talk can convey.  Among them are certain aspects of politics, by which  I mean the essential and eternal human effort to craft the common life on which we all depend.”  As we discuss this book, we will include observations from the work of Cynthia Bourgeault and continue to offer meditation time.

In Advent, we will explore practices that help or hinder sacred living.  We know that to live is to take risks.  True ‘faith’ is learning to risk each new moment.  This is the vibrant truth of Advent, and of every season of life.   Please join us and bring your heart to our discussions.
